The Victory Bell That Didn’t Tell the Whole Story

At just five years old, Ada’s life was turned upside down. In February 2023, she began experiencing bruising, headaches, sore legs, and nausea — symptoms that seemed minor at first but quickly revealed a far more serious problem. When her family noticed extensive bruising, they took her for a blood test on a Friday morning, hoping for reassurance. By that evening, their GP delivered the devastating news: Ada had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and needed to head immediately to the oncology ward at Sheffield. For her parents, the world shifted in an instant, replaced by fear, uncertainty, and the urgent reality of a child facing cancer.

From the very beginning, Ada showed a spirit that would inspire everyone around her. She became part of the ALL-Together 1 trial, embarking on a treatment journey that would last two years and one month — a period filled with medical procedures, hospital stays, and moments of both pain and triumph. Her days were marked by frontline and maintenance chemotherapy, the insertion of a portacath, countless blood and platelet transfusions, courses of steroids, and routine lumbar punctures under general anaesthetic. Each procedure, no matter how difficult, was met with courage and resilience far beyond her years.

Throughout her treatment, Ada remained an extraordinary mix of positivity, bravery, and joy. Despite the needles, medications, and long hospital days, she maintained her bright, cheerful personality. Nurses and doctors often commented on her strength and kindness, noting how she brought smiles and light to the ward even while undergoing the most challenging procedures. Her ability to stay happy and strong amidst such a difficult journey was a daily inspiration to everyone around her.

Her family watched with awe as Ada faced each challenge. Even during the toughest days, when treatment left her exhausted and uncomfortable, she remained determined to engage with the world around her. She laughed, played, and shared affection with her parents and fellow patients, proving that a child’s spirit can remain unbroken even in the harshest circumstances. Every transfusion, every hospital visit, and every round of chemotherapy became a milestone of resilience, a testament to her inner strength.

Finally, in March 2025, Ada reached a life-changing milestone — the end of her treatment. The moment she rang the bell at the hospital marked not just the conclusion of a grueling journey, but the triumph of determination, hope, and courage. The celebration was filled with friends, family, and joy — a reminder of how far she had come and the battles she had overcome. The bell ringing symbolized victory, resilience, and a future filled with possibilities beyond the hospital walls.

Today, Ada has returned to a life full of promise and joy. She is back at school full-time, catching up with friends, and embracing activities she loves — especially her dance classes. Her determination and positivity continue to shine, earning her the affectionate title of “dancing queen” from everyone who knows her. Her energy and spirit show that despite the years of treatment and the hardships she endured, she has retained the joy and curiosity that make childhood magical.

Ada’s mum, Kim, reflects on her daughter’s journey with pride and amazement: “Ada has amazed us every single day with her bravery and joy. She has shown us what true strength looks like, and we couldn’t be prouder of our little hero.” Her words capture the essence of Ada’s journey — one defined not only by illness and treatment, but by resilience, courage, and an unwavering spirit that inspires everyone around her.
