Maeve’s Fight for Light: The Little Girl Who Refused to Give Up

For three-year-old Maeve, a day filled with climbing, dancing, and building forts with her big sisters, Freya and Shiloh, was the kind of happiness she lived for. As the youngest of three girls, Maeve’s world was one of boundless imagination, laughter, and play. But that world came to an abrupt halt when a series of unsettling symptoms changed her life forever.

It all began when Maeve complained of a sore head, a common enough complaint in toddlers. But when her behavior changed, and she began tilting her head and feeling unsteady on her feet, her parents, Amy and Mitchell, knew something was seriously wrong. What followed was a whirlwind of doctor visits, tests, and fear. The moment they received a CT scan result revealing a large mass in Maeve’s cerebellum, their world shattered.

“We were in complete shock,” says Amy. “We just didn’t know what to think. What type of tumour is it? Is it cancerous? Can they remove it? Will she be okay?”

The unknowns were terrifying, but the family’s journey had just begun. Maeve was immediately admitted to the hospital, and preparations for brain surgery began. The location of the tumour was high-risk, so the doctors were clear: the goal was not to fully remove it but to reduce the pressure in Maeve’s brain.

In the days leading up to surgery, Maeve’s family was introduced to the invaluable support of Starlight. “Starlight made such a big difference during a really difficult time,” says Mitchell. “As soon as the Captain Starlights arrived, Maeve’s face lit up with joy.” For Maeve, moments of joy in the hospital became a lifeline as she faced what was about to be a long and grueling recovery.

The day of her surgery was a blur of anxiety. Amy recalls the 13-hour wait, unsure of what the outcome would be. The surgery was a success, and to everyone’s relief, the doctors were able to remove the entire tumour. But the real test came when the biopsy revealed that Maeve had brain cancer—Medulloblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.

“The diagnosis was crushing,” Amy shares. “We had so many unknowns about the treatment, and the anxiety was overwhelming. We just wanted to get our little girl back to herself.”

Life as they knew it came to a halt. Amy and Mitchell stopped working to care for Maeve, and the strain on their family was immense. Maeve’s two older sisters, Freya and Shiloh, struggled with their own confusion, missing their mum and sister while trying to understand what was happening.

Maeve’s treatment began immediately: intense chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiation. “The treatments were brutal,” Amy explains. “As soon as Maeve was almost back to her usual self, the next cycle began. It was relentless.”

During the months of treatment, Maeve’s hospital stays were long, and the emotional toll on her was immense. The fear of the unknown was compounded by the physical pain and the exhaustion of the ongoing treatments. But through it all, Starlight was there to bring moments of relief.

“Starlight became the highlight of every hospital visit,” says Mitchell. “Maeve looked forward to going to the Starlight Express Room, playing games, and making slime with Captain Starlight. It helped her forget, even if just for a moment, the pain and fear of what she was going through.”

Starlight not only provided Maeve with a space to play and relax but also gave her siblings, Freya and Shiloh, a place where they could come together as a family and find joy amidst the chaos of hospital life. “We make Starlight the center of every hospital visit,” Mitchell says. “It gives the kids a chance to see that hospital doesn’t always have to be a scary place. They can still laugh, play, and have fun.”

As Maeve’s treatment continues, her progress is remarkable. While she still faces the physical challenges of her treatment, she is slowly regaining her strength. Her latest milestone was learning how to run, jump, and play at her local playground. “She’s made so much progress,” says Amy. “Every day is a victory for us.”

Perhaps the most heartwarming moment came when Maeve was granted a Starlight Wish to visit Bluey’s World in Queensland. Maeve counted down the days, excited for her family adventure filled with animal encounters at Australia Zoo and fun water activities. “It was the best week of Maeve’s life,” Amy recalls. “The magic Starlight created for us was something we could never have matched. We’ll remember it forever.”

Despite the ongoing treatment and hospital visits, Maeve continues to shine with the strength and resilience that has defined her journey. Starlight has been an irreplaceable part of this journey, providing moments of joy and relief that have helped Maeve and her family endure the toughest of times. “Starlight’s impact on our family has been incredible,” Mitchell says. “Every dollar donated helps families like ours through traumatic experiences. To anyone thinking of supporting, I’d say please do. It’s vital that Starlight keeps doing what they do—bringing joy and happiness to families in need.”

Maeve’s journey isn’t over, but with the support of Starlight and the love of her family, she continues to defy the odds. The road ahead may be filled with challenges, but every day Maeve proves that with hope, love, and a little help from Starlight, there is always light in the darkest of times.
